Assignment 2 – Developed Idea
Having shot what I thought were my assignment images, when I looked at the selection I felt actually they were lacking context and didn’t come across as I had hoped. I had hoped that the objects that were very much ‘out of place’ would stand out more. Like an alien in the scene. However all it was was a set of photos of mess laying around my house. Which, in itself, could have made an adequate series, but it wasn’t the context I was going for. I wanted the photographs to portray how these things weren’t where they belonged. But actually the subject of my image jut got lost amongst…

Nigel Shafran
I came across the work of Nigel Shafran when looking for images that held a similar raw, unedited and messy feel as that I was going for. When looking through Shafran’s website, I found that some series’ had a very clear correlation with each other in their content and style Packages (2012-2013). Whereas others had little to no consistency in their content or subject matter Ruthbook (1992-2004), however by being grouped together and given a name – in this case ‘Ruthbook’ – we can assume these are all images linked to his wife, Ruth, who is the lady that is the subject of many of the images. Interestingly it is…

Assignment two – final idea
As I stood making toast I once again found myself mulling over how/what I was going to shoot for my assignment. I’d recently explored a new idea that had come to me on one of my walks where I had found a lone bobble on a bobble hat sat abandoned longing for its owner on top of a fence post. Further on I found a single glove on a bench. I thought about how these things were in use and then got left behind and seemingly forgotten. I noticed a few similar lost property items when I was out another time and thought it would make for an interesting series…

Assignment 2 More ideas – Things
While mindlessly scrolling Instagram this morning my thumb paused on an image posted by the F22 group; one from a series by Wendy Carrig which had just won gold in the Still Life & Object category in the AOP 2020 Awards. The photograph was one of a discarded lighter with an image of a pin-up style model printed on the front. Looking well-battered and photographed against a decayed looking background, I paused because with the print on the lighter, it almost looked like a portrait photo, but I then noticed it was in fact an object. This one image started a little whirlwind of thoughts as I clicked through to…

Assignment 2 further thoughts – Things.
Over lock down, I – like many others – have been attempting to declutter and rid ourselves of the abundance of ‘things’ in our lives. It never fails to amaze me how we collect so much stuff. My husband is by his own admittance quite the hoarder and I have to work hard to keep my hoarding tendencies in check. I long for the organised homely feel of the images we see gracing interior design magazines, or maybe slightly more realistically, the ikea catalogue, and for the most part our home echos such Scandinavian style cues – but our stuff takes over and it feels like an eternal battle between…

Assignment 2 – Initial Ideas – Collecting
BriefCreate a series of between six and ten photographs on one of the following subjects: Things Views Heads With much of my work so far focused on every day life, I felt the same should apply to this assignment. I have a few thoughts about each option but I am currently unsure which avenue to explore further. I may shoot some images of each and see what interests me the most and gives me the most satisfaction. Things: Creating a DIY lightbox I will photograph a number of my everyday items against a plain background, creating an almost archival feel, or similar to a catalogue item. I would like these…
